Things to do in Filey when it's raining
Inspired by Warren Zevon's "Things to do in Denver when you're dead", here's some ideas for what to do in Filey on a wet day.
- Catch a train - they go to Scarborough, Bempton, Brid, Beverley and Hull
- Catch a bus - the countryside's lovely
- Go swimming - in the sea if you like (it's only rain after all), but there's
Leisure World on the front in Brid, another one in Scarborough, and if you fancy a drive there's waterworld just north of York.
- Visit Burton Agnes. A magnificent Elizabethan mansion
in The Wolds. Can be done by bus from Brid.
- Sewerby Hall - just outside Flamborough.
Was a small stately home, now a museum with a lovely little zoo. There's a "land train" from Brid, or buses direct from Filey.
- Go see a film - both cinemas in Filey are long gone, but there's a cinema in Brid and three in Scarborough.
- Check out the local hostelries and follow it up with fish and chips. Guaranteed to brighten any day.
- Visit The Deep - it's in Hull, but trains go there.
- Go for a walk on the beach
- Eden Camp - a fair way, but plenty of it's indoors.
- Yorkshire Air Museum - a fair drive, but if aircraft float your boat.
- Hit the charity shops and buy a book or two
- Stay in bed
- North York Moors Railway - a fair way to Pickering, but from there the trains now go all the way to Whitby (sometimes)
